Well, this came as a surprise. Whether you liked Macs or you didn't, for a long time it has been hard not to concede that Macbook displays have been superior to standard notebook displays, much to the joy of photographers and designers everywhere. So what's all this about a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 topping the new MBP 15" in color accuracy?

Professional photographer Rob Galbraith uses his Dell Inspiron Mini 9 daily. No, it can't handle tough conversions and complex tasks, but it's perfect to "import, select and transmit JPEGs" as well as the standard netbook uses of email and web browsing. What he didn't expect was that the viewing quality would exceed that of the new 15" Macbook Pro.

Gilbraith's biggest problem with the new MBP is the don't-even-think-about-opening-that-shade all glass glossy display. The display caused enough problems, apparently, that the Macbook rated 4th out of the 4 laptops tested. Two Lenovo entries were also tested and they were rated the top two of the bunch, with the Dell coming in 3rd.

For the longest time, Apple laptop displays ruled the roost around here. With very few exceptions, going back to the days of the PowerBook G4, portable Macs were considerably more colour accurate [than anyone else]. Thanks to Lenovo, however, and Apple's decision to standardize on the glossiest of glossy screens... Macs are no longer at the top of the laptop display heap in our minds.

Gilbraith does admit that the viewing angles on the MBP are much better that those on the Dell Mini, and if your emphasis lies with that the MBP catapults all the way up to 3rd place in his rankings, passing the Mini. But no matter which way you look at it, this is visibly eye-popping news given the dramatic price difference between the Dell (~$300) and the MBP (~$2000).

For starters, a fair share of the new MacBook's circuitry comes from Nvidia instead of Intel. Most notably the 9400M integrated graphics, which is a big step up from the Intel X3100 found in the white MacBook. Apple claims it has five times the performance over the Intel IGP, but in the real world the difference is actually even more significant - the 9400M lets you to play some recent games whereas the old and tired Intel X3100 certainly does not.
Design

As far as the new design goes, this is arguably the best looking laptop since the Osborne 1. The no-doubt well paid broilers at Apple's design department have done an awesome job with the new "unibody" construction, allegedly made from a single piece of aluminum.

To get completely in line with an otherwise minimalistic design, they also decided to let go of the trackpad button altogether, opting for one built into the glass trackpad itself. Thanks to the multi-touch functionality, this works very well - actually there's no need to use the built-in button at all. The new four-finger gestures to bring down Expose and Spaces are also well implemented.
Connectivity

Unfortunately, they didn't bother to drill a lot of holes in that single piece of aluminum. There's not a single FireWire port to be found, which is bound to feel like a betrayal to many diehard Mac users with a room full of FireWire accessories. On top of that it only has a measly two USB ports and Apple's proprietary Mini DisplayPort, so forget about using your external monitor unless you fork over an additional $29 for a standard VGA or DVI adapter, or $99 (!) for the dual-link DVI adapter.

The new MacBook is available in two varieties (so far): one 2.0GHz version (our review sample) and a more expensive 2.4GHz model with a larger hard drive and backlit keyboard. Both models come with the same Nvidia chipset, a LED-backlit screen, and 2 gigs of top-of-the-line 1066MHz DDR3 RAM. It's worth mentioning that the hard drives that ship with the new MacBooks are very well isolated and silent. When the laptop is idle or doing light tasks like web browsing, it's almost inaudible.

Performance and Games

Thanks to the DDR3 memory, a 1066MHz front side bus, and the Nvidia chipset, the new MacBooks are faster than older models at the same CPU clock speed. Our 2.0GHz MacBook generated an Xbench score of 166.40. It is also perfectly capable of playing some games - WoW delivered fully playable framerates (50-60 fps) at high settings, which is to be expected from an aging game, but even Call of Duty 4 was playable with the settings tuned down a little. Apple promised five hours of battery life, which we found to be a little too optimistic, but the 4.5 hours we managed to squeeze out of it is still very good.

Overall, the aluminum MacBook is an excellent laptop. Although it's somewhat more expensive than we had hoped, you get a solid and great-looking laptop, and some features that you'll never find in a similar PC.

We haven't reviewed the Sony VAIO Z laptop yet - the following is a summary based on the hardware in the VAIO Z series.

Summary and Information

The VAIO Z series is one of Sony's premium ultraportable series, and is priced accordingly. Like most VAIOs it comes with a little extra, such as a high-resolution 'X-BRITE' LED-lit screen, a Blu-Ray player and dedicated graphics.

It's neither the thinnest or lightest laptop, like for instance the MacBook Air or the Lenovo X301, but makes up for it by using more powerful hardware. For example, the VAIO Z is equipped with the regular, higher clocked Core 2 Duo's, whereas its thinner competition use low-voltage CPUs. It even has a dedicated graphics card to help with the HD media playback and provide some light gaming capability, which is unusual in this weight category.

An optional upgrade that should make this laptop incredibly fast is the dual-SSD RAID configuration. This gives it almost double the performance of the already fast and completely silent Solid State Drive technology. Coincidentally, it also doubles the price tag - but hey, if you want the fastest laptop on the planet, I'm sure you don't expect it to be cheap.

Thin and light is in. The new Lenovo ThinkPad X200 is the newest ultraportable designed to replace the ThinkPad X61 ultra-portable. A little brother to the 13.3-inch ThinkPad X300, the X200 encompasses elements of both machines in a lightweight package. Incorporating Intels newest Montevina platform, the Thinkpad X200 features Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 clocked at a speedy 2.4GHz with 3MB L2 cache and a low 25 TDP power consumption.

With respect to design, the ThinkPad X200 maintains the conservative black rubber finish built in a rugged chassis. Weighing in at only 2.95 pounds with the 4-cell battery, the ThinkPad X200 is designed for mobility. Our unit came with 9-cell battery which offered over twice the battery life but protrudes from the rear and adds additional weight. The 12.1-inch widescreen display features 1280x800 resolution with 16:10 aspect ratio. Overall, the display is nice to the eyes. Viewing angles are adequate and display-brightness is sufficiently lit. With a thin and light machine, the Thinkpad X200 omits an optical drive. Instead, you're welcome to order an external USB 2.0 DVD drive (like the MacBook Air). In terms of the ports, this thin and light machine offers: 3 USB ports, monitor-out, Gigabit Ethernet, ExpressCard 54mm slot, Bluetooth and WLAN. There is an option for 1 media reader, or an SD card slot. Lenovo allows you to upgrade its hard drive up to 320GB capacity or 64GB Solid State Disk (SSD).

Some new stand-out features we should mention: spill flow keyboard, biometric finger print reader, LED light for dark environments, Webcam, ability to connect to GPS WWAN services from Verizon, Vodafone, or Telus. Battery Performance With our 9-cell battery, we were ecstatic to operate the machine for approximately 8 hours and 47 minutes. You read right. Normal usage of web surfing, word processing, and listening to music.

Conclusion

The Thinkpad X200 will serve a specific audience: mobile professionals who demand power and portability. The X200 fills this void without a doubt, offering excellent battery life and power under the hood that matches most mid-size entertainment laptops twice its size. Although the X200 isnt like the X300, its more affordable The ThinkPad X200 is a welcome improvement over the popular X61 series.

This little thing has a functional keyboard that can flip the screen that becomes a tablet with full touch-screen capabilities. Weighing only 1.56lbs and measuring 6.75-in x 6-in x 1-in, the Lifebook U810 is certainly is absolutely tiny, especially when you consider it�s a fully Vista-capable computer running inside.

The U810 can turn into 3 setups: laptop, tablet, or UMPC modes. Swivel and flip the screen over, and the device can be used as a UMPC (Ultra mobile portable computer). You can pull out the stylus and use it as a portable tablet. For a tiny machine, expect a tiny 56-key QWERTY keyboard that you can (barely) use if you find you need to type as a laptop. As you may expect, due to the size, its missing a lot key connection ports like: VGA output, expansion slots, and a half dozen USB ports. Instead, youll get one USB 2.0 port, SD media slot AND Compact Flash slots on either sides, a connection port to connect a Fujitsus Ethernet dongle and accessories. The remaining ports include the charger, headphone and microphone ports.

Intels mobile A110 processor found in other mobile devices (Smart phones and UMPCS) and runs at a modest 800MHz coupled with the Intel 945 chipset. Also includes 1GB of DDR2 RAM and a 4200RPM 40GB hard drive. The 5.6-inch LCD screen (1024 x 600) is a sharp little glossy display with accurate touch-screen functionality that gives the imot plenty of flexibility to work with. Feel free to swivel and rotate the screen. Thankfully, the U810 is able to offer 802.11a/b/g WiFi, a finger-print access, and built-in webcam.

Performance

The Fujitsu comes pre-installed with Microsoft Vista. What does that mean? The load times are downright atrocious, taking up to 2 minutes to get to the desktop screen when powering up. It�s so slow that by the time Vista is fully ready to use, you already feel like the computer has already drained half the battery. However, things run much better as we noticed no slow down in web browsing and general desktop usages. The Fujitsu U810 managed only an average 3 hours of battery time running mixed video, web browsing, and data entry. Thats very disappointing for a machine of this size.

Conclusion

All all in one portable machine designed to offer mobile users to work, its certainly not perfect. With the lack of some ports and poor performance, its not ideal for users who demand power. Rather, its designed for casual users who need more than just a PDA. For those looking for a versatile portable computer, this is worth it. But if you dont mind having something bigger, go for a real tablet PC or ultra-portable laptop.
